DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel Review

And here is my current favorite gel, DevaCurl ultra defining gel!!  Before this, I was using Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee but Biosilk Gelee is no longer CG friendly and the new formulation contains silicone and drying alcohol too…. I just can’t think of any reason …. why? More companies are going silicone-free and they are going in reverse direction ㋡. Anyways after finishing up with Biosilk, I was looking for a hard hold gel so thought of giving DevaCurl a try. So lets see how I find it on my hair. Does it do a good job in keeping my curls intact in this hot and humid environment?

Ingrdients Analysis:

VP/VA Copolymer: Styling polymer. Main ingredient that provides hold in this product.

Glycerin: Humectant which penetrates and retains the water (moisture) inside the hair shaft.

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein: High molecular weight protein which works by forming a film, provides conditioning and prevents hair moisture loss. It helps prevent the frizz caused by humidity. If your hair is too sensitive to protein, then watch out for this ingredient.

Hydrolyzed Corn Protein: Medium molecular weight (in this product) protein which works a film former and provides conditioning and hence prevents hair moisture loss.

Hydrolyzed Soy Protein: Low-medium molecular weight protein, condition hair, retain moisture and softens hair.

Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract: Plant extracts.

Ethylhexylglycerin: Preservative.

Disodium EDTA: Chelating agent.  It reacts with heavy metal iron presents in the product formulation to prevent metal ions from deteriorating the product. It also helps to maintain clarity and prevents it from smelling rancid.

Phenoxyethanol: Preservative.

Polyquaternium-7: Cationic conditioning agent. Provides slip, smoothens cuticle layer and works as anti-static agent.

Aminomethyl Propanol: pH adjuster.

Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer: Thickener.

My Experience:

I have only good things to say about this gel. Currently it is my favorite gel and I still have a little less than 1/4 the of the bottle (12oz) left to finish) after using for last 4-5 months for my hair length.

~ Smooth consistency and glides very well and hence easy to spread on hair.

~ Light enough which won’t weigh your hair down and should work on every type of hair wavy and curly.

~ Leaves a cast (but not very stiff cast) which you can scrunch out once hair is dry.

~ Pleasant smell and not too overpowering like Kinky-Curly Custard.

~ Works well enough in high humid environment.

If you are someone who doesn’t want too many products, then definitely you can try this one.

It does have high molecular weight protein so if you are protein sensitive, then may be it is better you try a travel size bottle first before buying a big one.

To get the best results, use a small amount of each section while styling. Watch my Rake-in Method video and see how much I use.  I have used it with As I am leave-in conditioner and Alaffia Curl Enhancing Leave-in conditioner, it is compatible with both of them. It should go well with other leave-in conditioners too.

How to use:

Watch Rake-in Method video or use it by following praying hand motion as I have show in my complete curly hair routine video and see how to use it to style curly/wavy hair after wash.

Price & Availability:

It is available on for 1800+ (Price varies depending on supplier). The cheapest I saw was 1577.
