Eco-Styler Olive Gel Review

ECO Styler Olive gel is one of the first product that I heard about when I started my CG journey eons ago. But I never thought of giving it a try after seeing its ingredients. It does not have any styling polymer and I prefer products that contain styling polymers. I like to have as few products as possible in my routine at time. So I always look for products that can give moisture and hold. But finally when I visited US last year, I picked ECO-styler considering it is so much cheaper in US.  So lets see what it can or can not do..

Eco-styler olive gel review

Product Description

Ecostyler Professional Styling Gel with Olive Oil is made with 100% pure olive oil. Olive oil helps your scalp naturally regulate its own moisturizing system. Olive oil helps attract moisture to your scalp and holds it in. Like all Ecoco styling gels, it is weightless and will leave your hair with a healthy shine and has a superior hold.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Carbomer, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Glycerin, Amino-2-Methyl-1-Propanol, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Polysorbate 20, Tetrasodium EDTA, Olive Oil, Fragrance (Parfum), CI 19140 Yellow 5

Ingredients Analysis

Carbomer: It is used as a thickner. You find this ingredient in almost all the aloe vera gels. When added to water it thickens it and creates a gel-like consistency.

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein: High molecular weight protein which works by forming a film and prevents hair moisture loss. It helps prevent the frizz caused by humidity. If your hair is too sensitive to protein, then watch out for this ingredient.

Glycerin: Humectant which penetrates and retains the water (moisture) inside the hair shaft.

Amino-2-Methyl-1-Propanol: Adjust the pH during the formulation.

Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate: Preservative

Polysorbate 20: Emusilfier. Mixes water and oils together and so they do not separate apart.

Tetrasodium EDTA: Chelating agent.  It reacts with heavy metal iron presents in the product formulation to prevent metal ions from deteriorating the product. It also helps to maintain clarity and prevents it from smelling rancid.

Olive Oil: We all know about it 🙂

CI 19140 Yellow 5: Color

Now the learning after reading the ingredients. Here Olive oil is listed after Tetrasodium EDTA which goes around 0.1% to 0.2%  (definitely less than 0.5%) in a product meaning 100 gm of your product will have 0.1 to 0.2 gm of EDTA. And Olive oil is mentioned after the EDTA meaning this product must have less than 0.5gm of olive oil in 100gm of the product. Never buy your products based on the front label of the bottle, always look at the back.

My Experience

As I mentioned at the start of this article, I always like to use products that have styling polymers. The reason is humidity. I live at a place with high humidity so I have to use products that can provide stronger hold. Otherwise my hair gets really frizzy easily. ECO-styler olive does not have any styling polymer. It is just thickened water that has humectant in it. Because of its consistency, it clumps hair really well and works for refreshing curls on non-wash days. It does not give crunchy hair when used as a refresher.

Special benefit for wavy hair. If you face a hard time in clumping hair, then this is the product you go for. But if you want your curls to last for longer then use a hard hold gel over it.

It has a 16oz of tub and I only used it as a refresher as I don’t face any difficulty in clumping my hair. So it is going to last me many months. It has a mild smell which I always prefer.

How to use

Use it on non-wash days to refresh hair. Wet hair first or take small amount of gel in wet palms and smooth it over your hair. If you need to define some unruly strands then finger coil them using it. If your hair takes oil well and does not get greasy then use a small amount of a lighter oil like Jojoba oil or pure Argan oil on top of it.

Another way to use it is to apply it in wet hair after your leave-in or after Squish to Condish to clump hair and enhance the curl definition. And then top it up with a hard hold gel for lasting curls.

You can replace this product with homemade Flax Seed gel or Aloe Vera gel. So if you are too lazy to make flax gel or your hair does not like aloe gel then you can give this one a try.

Availability & Price

1320 for 16oz

In India, it is available at . It is very cheap when you buy it from US. There are different variants of Eco styler like Castor & Flaxseed oil gel, Argan oil and Krystal and all of these have PVP as styling polymer. ECO Argan leaves a cast on hair and has better hold than ECO olive and ECO castor & Flaxseed gel.
